Michigan Land Conservancy Invests in 1.15 MW Storage from Advanced Battery Concepts.

The push for renewable energy solutions continues to gain momentum in the United States, with Michigan emerging as a key player in the energy storage sector. Highlighting this trend, a new energy storage project at the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy (GTRLC) headquarters in Traverse City has secured final funding approval from the U.S. Department of Energy.

The project, spearheaded by Advanced Battery Concepts (ABC), will feature a 1.15-megawatt battery energy storage system designed to complement an existing 185-kilowatt solar photovoltaic system at the conservancy’s site. This setup aims to enhance energy resilience by storing solar-generated electricity and distributing it as needed, thus optimizing the use of renewable energy sources.

Funding for the initiative comes through Congressionally Directed Spending overseen by the Department of Energy. The project will utilize ABC’s innovative GreenSeal® bipolar lead battery technology. These batteries, which are noted for using significantly less lead compared to traditional lead batteries, will be housed in three commercial-scale BOX-BE™ energy storage enclosures, further supporting Michigan’s role in the domestic energy storage supply chain.

Advanced Battery Concepts has emphasized the safety and recyclability of their GreenSeal® technology, which retains the environmental benefits of lead-based chemistry while reducing material use. The batteries are both developed and manufactured in Michigan, underlining the state’s contribution to advancing energy technologies.

With funding secured, the GTRLC project is now entering the procurement and manufacturing phase. Installation and commissioning of the energy storage system are scheduled for the second quarter of 2027, marking a significant step forward in the integration of sustainable energy infrastructure in the region.
