Sheinbaum addressed Trump’s recent comments, which criticized Mexico’s efforts in combating drug trafficking, corruption, and organized crime, by asserting that her country is well aware of its challenges and is actively working to address them.
During a morning press conference, Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico should not be judged by external parties and highlighted her administration’s accountability for its actions. She also urged the United States to focus more on its own responsibilities in curbing drug trafficking, money laundering, the illegal flow of weapons, and drug consumption.
Sheinbaum raised questions about the measures undertaken by the U.S. government to tackle drug traffickers operating across the border, to prevent money laundering, and to curb the illegal flow of firearms into Mexico, which she claimed bolsters the power of criminal organizations operating within her country. Additionally, she called for enhanced efforts to combat opioid consumption and addiction within the United States.
While acknowledging the gravity of drug production and trafficking issues, Sheinbaum argued that the crisis encompasses responsibilities on both sides of the border. Trump has previously urged Mexico to intensify its crackdown on officials allegedly linked to drug cartels and organized crime, and has noted various arrests, seizures, and prosecutions as evidence of Mexico’s current efforts, while pushing for more decisive actions against corruption.
In defense of her government’s record, Sheinbaum cited the prosecution of officials suspected of ties to criminal organizations, stating that these actions are taken when credible evidence is available, regardless of political affiliations. She also referenced Operation Swarm, a security initiative targeting criminal and corruption networks, as a testament to Mexico’s commitment to addressing these challenges.
Concluding her remarks, Sheinbaum called for greater transparency regarding U.S. efforts to combat fentanyl trafficking and domestic drug consumption, emphasizing the need for both nations to take a comprehensive look at their roles in the ongoing cross-border drug crisis.
