Major AI Firms Commit to Voluntary Safety Framework in White House Accord

In a move to enhance safety oversight in artificial intelligence (AI) development, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that major AI companies have agreed to a voluntary framework. The agreement, dubbed the “White House Accord on Super Intelligence,” was made public after a meeting with top technology executives at the White House. The meeting comes amid increasing concerns about the risks posed by advanced AI systems, including potentially unpredictable behaviors and cybersecurity vulnerabilities.

The accord calls for participating companies to implement robust internal controls aimed at monitoring and detecting potential issues within their AI systems. It also requires these companies to appoint dedicated teams to oversee the implementation of these safety measures. To ensure accountability, the agreement stipulates that AI companies should work with independent external auditors or evaluators to verify the effectiveness of their safety controls. In addition, independent board committees are to be established to review findings from both internal and external assessments.

This initiative is voluntary and lacks legal enforceability, although the framework suggests that these measures could eventually be integrated into formal legislation or regulations. The meeting was attended by leading figures in the technology industry, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI President Greg Brockman, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, and Elon Musk.

President Trump emphasized the importance of the tech industry taking responsibility for the safe development of AI while continuing to push for innovation. He has consistently argued against excessive regulation, which he believes could hinder the sector’s growth. The focus on AI safety reflects a growing public and governmental interest in addressing the potential cybersecurity risks and environmental impacts of expansive data centers that support AI technologies.
