Ceasefire with Iran Threatens Economic Stability Amid Rejected Peace Proposals

The ongoing ceasefire between the United States and Iran is under severe strain, with former President Donald Trump asserting that it is on “life support.” He is contemplating the resumption of U.S. Navy military escorts for vessels navigating the Strait of Hormuz to counteract Iran’s blockade of this crucial maritime passage. Trump has dismissed Iran’s peace proposals as “stupid” and denied feeling any internal pressure to negotiate a deal.

Trump, referencing the ceasefire that has been in effect since April 7, criticized the Iranian response, labeling the proposals as worthless. He likened the situation to a dire medical prognosis, saying, “I would say the ceasefire is on massive life support, where the doctor walks in and says: ‘Sir, your loved one has approximately a 1% chance of living.’” Last week, the U.S. had forwarded a set of demands to Iran aimed at de-escalation, primarily focusing on curbing Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. However, Trump’s rejection of Iran’s counter-proposals has kept tensions high.

Project Freedom, a U.S. initiative to provide military escorts to oil tankers transiting the strait, was halted shortly after its inception last week. This decision was taken ostensibly to allow Iran time to consider the U.S. peace terms. However, the plan met resistance from Saudi Arabia, which declined to offer support, citing concerns over escalating the situation by using its airspace or bases.

Following recent developments, oil prices surged once again as Iran declared there would be no further discussions on lifting the blockade unless its conditions were met. Maj Gen Mohammad Ali Jafari, a former leader of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, made Iran’s stance clear: “As long as the war on all fronts is not over, sanctions are not lifted, blocked funds are not released, war damages are not compensated and Iran’s sovereignty over the strait of Hormuz not recognised, there will be no other negotiations.”
