Selma Launches Digital Innovation Hub, Boosting Local Economy and Business Growth

In a significant move toward boosting economic opportunity and innovation, the Selma Housing Authority, in partnership with Metro Digital Group and several educational and civic leaders, has unveiled plans to establish the Selma Digital Innovation Center. This ambitious redevelopment project aims to transform a historic site at 528 Washington Avenue into a vibrant hub for workforce development, entrepreneurship, and digital innovation. The center is designed to serve students, young adults, entrepreneurs, and the broader Selma community by providing access to cutting-edge technology, AI, and digital skills training.

Collins Pettaway Jr., President of Progress Partners for Selma, emphasized the broad impact of this initiative, stating that it goes beyond a mere building upgrade. “We are creating future opportunity infrastructure for our community. Technology is rapidly changing the workforce, and Selma must position itself to compete and thrive in a modern digital economy,” he noted. The center will offer a range of facilities, including gaming and esports environments, creator and streaming studios, AI and STEM learning labs, and media production spaces, all aimed at preparing the community for a digitally-driven economy.

The development of the Selma Digital Innovation Center is being carried out through a collaborative public-private partnership that includes the Mayor’s Office, Selma City Schools, Selma University, Wallace Community College Selma, Progress Partners, and Metro Digital Group. Metro Digital Group, known for its expertise in gaming, STEM, and digital engagement, will lead the development and ecosystem deployment for the project. Shaon Berry, President of Metro Digital Group, expressed pride in being part of this transformative initiative, highlighting its alignment with Metro’s mission to foster inclusive technology and innovation ecosystems.

Local leaders see the initiative as a symbolic step forward in Selma’s ongoing efforts to enhance economic development, education, and community revitalization. Councilwoman Lesia James remarked on the importance of such partnerships, stating, “The future of Selma depends on partnerships like this. By bringing together local government, education, housing leadership, and innovation-focused organizations, we can create opportunities for our youth and residents that simply did not exist before.” Progress Partners Vice President John Deamer added that the center aims to eliminate traditional barriers to learning and opportunity, providing pathways for individuals interested in technology, entrepreneurship, and digital media.

Scheduled to begin planning in June 2026, the Selma Digital Innovation Center is expected to open in 2027. The project is currently engaging with strategic partners, sponsors, and philanthropic collaborators to support its long-term vision. Roger Blackmon, Progress Partners Director of Technology, expressed enthusiasm for the advanced technology that will be featured in the center, creating an environment where individuals and families can learn and grow together. Progress Partners for Selma, established in November 2025, continues to drive economic development and community pride through initiatives like this, aiming to bring sustainable change and results to the Selma community.
