His remarks come as the organization gears up for a summit in Ankara, where he plans to address concerns regarding the perceived imbalance in contributions among member countries. Trump specifically criticized several NATO allies for failing to back the United States during its conflict with Iran, calling it “ridiculous” that Washington continues to bear a disproportionate share of NATO’s defense responsibilities.
Trump has consistently called on European NATO members to take on a larger role in ensuring their own security. Reflecting this stance, his administration has already initiated measures to scale back certain U.S. defense commitments in Europe. This ongoing push for a more equitable distribution of defense duties among NATO members has been a focal point of his foreign policy approach.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also addressed the growing tensions within the alliance, noting that the president was dissatisfied with the lackluster response from some NATO countries regarding U.S. military operations in the Middle East. The forthcoming NATO summit in Ankara, scheduled for July 7–8, will bring together leaders from the alliance’s 32 member countries.
