In a significant shift in international relations, Mexico is working to revitalize its security partnership with the United States under the leadership of President Claudia Sheinbaum. This comes after a period of tense relations during the tenure of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. A notable figure in this renewed cooperation is Omar García Harfuch, the Security Cabinet coordinator, who has been actively engaging with senior US officials. Their discussions have primarily revolved around enhancing intelligence sharing and intensifying efforts against organized crime, which Mexican authorities claim has led to quicker responses to criminal activities.
Since Sheinbaum took office, Mexican law enforcement has reported substantial successes, including thousands of arrests, significant seizures of weapons and drugs, and the dismantling of numerous clandestine drug labs. Additionally, there has been an expedited process for extraditing high-profile criminal suspects to the United States. Officials have noted a marked reduction in fentanyl trafficking as a result of these efforts. This represents a clear departure from the previous administration’s approach, which saw the closure of a US intelligence unit in Mexico and stricter limitations on the activities of foreign security agents.
The deterioration of bilateral relations under López Obrador was exacerbated by several incidents, notably the 2020 arrest of former Defense Minister Salvador Cienfuegos, which led to disputes over organized crime investigations. Further straining the relationship were allegations in 2024 that linked drug-trafficking funds to López Obrador’s 2006 presidential campaign. Although these claims did not lead to formal charges, they contributed to eroding trust between Mexico and the United States.
Even as Mexico and the US work towards closer collaboration in addressing organized crime, President Sheinbaum has been vocal about maintaining the country’s sovereignty and the importance of mutual respect in these dealings. Her administration has also expressed concerns over perceived attempts by US officials to influence or create divisions within Mexico’s security leadership. Despite these challenges, both nations continue to seek ways to coordinate effectively against criminal networks while upholding Mexico’s national interests.
