Air quality alerts have been issued across more than 20 states in the United States as smoke from hundreds of wildfires burning in Canada drifts southward, impacting millions of people. Originating mainly from wildfires in northern Ontario, the smoke has spread over the Midwest and Northeast, leading to unhealthy or even hazardous air quality levels in affected regions.
Cities such as Chicago, Detroit, and Minneapolis have reported some of the poorest air quality readings, while the smoke and accompanying haze have also made their way to New York, Boston, and Washington, D.C. In response, health authorities are advising the public to minimize outdoor activities, particularly urging caution for children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with pre-existing heart or lung issues.
In several states, officials have recommended that residents stay indoors as much as possible due to the air pollution. New York officials have highlighted this smoke event as potentially the most severe since 2023, when the city was enveloped in a dense orange haze from Canadian wildfires. To mitigate the situation, the state has distributed thousands of N95 masks and increased access to cooling centers amid the dual challenges of high temperatures and poor air quality.
The National Weather Service forecasts that the smoky conditions will linger over parts of the Midwest and Northeast until Friday, with rain expected in some areas later in the weekend, which may help improve air quality. This environmental issue has once again brought attention to the significant impact of large-scale wildfires and their consequences that cross national borders, affecting public health and the environment on a broader scale.
