The United States Mint has commenced the production of a new commemorative $1 coin featuring President Donald Trump, as part of the 250th anniversary celebrations of the nation. The unveiling of this coin is slated for the upcoming fall season. This initiative was confirmed by the US Treasury Department, and although the final design was approved earlier this year, the coin now being produced has undergone slight modifications from its original concept, notably sporting a gold-colored finish rather than being made of solid gold.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that this coin aims to pay tribute to America’s enduring legacy of liberty and patriotism. He emphasized that it serves as a celebration of the nation’s core values and its unwavering commitment to freedom. On the obverse side of the coin, there is a portrait of President Trump accompanied by the word “LIBERTY,” along with the dates “1776–2026,” and the phrase “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The reverse side features the iconic bald eagle from the Great Seal of the United States, accompanied by the national motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
The decision to include a living president on the currency has sparked criticism, as it runs counter to a longstanding federal law that generally prohibits such depictions. However, officials from the Treasury Department have defended the move, asserting that the Secretary of the Treasury has the discretion to authorize commemorative coin issues under certain circumstances.
This newly minted coin is part of a broader series of initiatives intended to honor the founding and history of the United States as it approaches its 250th year. While the inclusion of President Trump’s likeness has been contentious, supporters argue that it reflects a momentous period in American history and the political landscape.
