President Donald Trump is poised to unveil a substantial initiative aimed at advancing nuclear energy in the United States. This plan includes providing $17.5 billion in low-interest federal loans, specifically designed to facilitate the deployment of Westinghouse AP1000 nuclear reactors nationwide. The funding, sourced through the US Department of Energy, is intended to finance critical equipment acquisitions for as many as ten AP1000 reactors, distributed across five dual-reactor projects. This effort is part of a wider strategy to bolster domestic energy production, addressing the surging electricity demand fueled by the growth of artificial intelligence data centers and expanding industrial sectors.
Seven utility companies have shown interest in the program, having signed letters of intent to participate. The loans are mainly aimed at supporting the early bulk procurement of specialized components needed for reactor construction, which is expected to stabilize supply chains and lower project costs. By utilizing this financing approach, the Trump administration anticipates that construction timelines for these projects could be reduced by as much as three years. If everything proceeds according to plan, the newly constructed reactors could commence commercial operations around the year 2035.
This nuclear energy initiative is part of a larger, ambitious $80 billion expansion project involving Westinghouse Electric Company, Cameco, and Brookfield Asset Management. The collaboration aims to kickstart construction on approximately ten new reactors by 2026. To mitigate the risk of cost overruns that have plagued previous nuclear projects, such as the Vogtle Nuclear Plant in Georgia, Westinghouse intends to implement standardized reactor designs and fixed-price contracts. The Vogtle expansion, initially projected to cost $14 billion, ended up exceeding $30 billion before its completion.
The project will primarily focus on the deployment of Westinghouse’s AP1000 pressurized water reactors, alongside the AP300 small modular reactor design. The AP1000 technology has already proven itself at the Vogtle facility, which marked a significant milestone by bringing the first new US nuclear reactors online in decades during 2023 and 2024. The administration sees nuclear power as a cornerstone of future energy security, with the United States currently deriving about 20% of its electricity from nuclear sources. This planned expansion is set to enhance the country’s capacity for reliable, carbon-free power generation while fostering economic and technological advancements.
