US Economic Growth Hits 3.4% Amid Rising Inflation and Consumer Concerns

The US economy grew at a robust pace in the third quarter of 2026, driven by strong consumer spending and significant investments in artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) rose by an annualized rate of 3.4% from July to September, surpassing economists’ predictions of a 3.2% increase. This growth underscores the resilience of the US economy despite external pressures like soaring oil prices due to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.

However, the economic expansion comes amid rising inflationary pressures. The Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index, which the Federal Reserve closely monitors, climbed by 0.5% in September, pushing the annual inflation rate to 3.6%, up from 3.4% in August. Similarly, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) indicated a rise in annual inflation to 3.7% in September. The core PCE inflation, excluding food and energy, stood at 3.1%.

The Federal Reserve has maintained its benchmark interest rate between 3.75% and 4%, acknowledging the persistent inflationary pressures. This decision reflects the balance the Fed seeks between controlling inflation and sustaining economic growth, as higher interest rates could dampen economic activity and affect the labor market.

Consumer spending, a critical component constituting over two-thirds of the US economy, continued to rise, registering an annualized growth rate of 3.8% in the third quarter. This growth is consistent with the previous quarter’s performance, supported by relatively low layoffs and ongoing household expenditure. However, consumers are increasingly dipping into their savings to maintain spending levels, exacerbated by gasoline prices exceeding $4 per gallon, approximately $1 higher than the previous year.

Investment in AI has emerged as a vital driver of economic growth, although concerns about the sustainability and costs of long-term AI projects are mounting. A potential slowdown in technology investments could pose risks to one of the economy’s key growth engines.

Despite these economic gains, consumer confidence has significantly deteriorated, with surveys revealing growing concerns over inflation, fuel, and grocery prices. This economic dissatisfaction has also mirrored in the declining approval ratings for President Donald Trump as the nation approaches the midterm elections.

Overall, while the latest GDP figures reflect a resilient economy, challenges such as rising prices, household savings depletion, and uncertainties in future investments could impede sustained growth in the months ahead.
