Democratic leaders in the United States are ramping up pressure on President Donald Trump to bring an end to the escalating conflict with Iran. This call for action follows the deaths of three US service members in recent military incidents in Jordan and Iraq, heightening fears about increasing casualties and the potential for a broader regional conflict. The Pentagon has released the identities of two soldiers killed in a strike at the Muwaffaq Salti air base in Jordan: First Lieutenant Tyler James Feehan, 25, from Hawaii, and Private Isabella Gonzales, 19, from Texas. Additionally, a third service member lost their life in northern Iraq during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance, and authorities are currently looking into the remains of a possible fourth victim found in Jordan.
The deaths coincide with the US military’s tenth consecutive wave of strikes targeting Iranian interests. In response, Iran has promised to retaliate against regional allies that support US military activities. Democratic lawmakers have expressed strong disapproval of President Trump’s management of the conflict, with Senator Chris Murphy cautioning that the situation is rapidly deteriorating. House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries has criticized the military campaign as an unnecessary and costly war that endangers American troops’ lives.
A number of Democrats, including Senators Mark Warner and Chris Van Hollen, have called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and urged the Trump administration to obtain congressional approval before undertaking any further military actions. Senator Jeanne Shaheen has also advocated for renewed diplomatic efforts to resolve the ongoing crisis. Congress has already enacted war powers resolutions aimed at curbing the president’s ability to continue military operations without legislative consent. Nonetheless, the White House maintains that the legal requirements for congressional authorization have not been met due to a previous ceasefire period.
The conflict, which reignited earlier this year, has led to at least 17 US military deaths, while estimates suggest that Iranian civilian casualties have surpassed 1,700. Despite the growing wave of criticism from Democrats, Republican leaders have largely supported Trump’s military approach, asserting that such action is essential to counter Iranian threats and safeguard US interests in the region. They have also cautioned that the conflict holds the potential to develop into a wider regional confrontation.
